Searching for a Common Ancestor

Our next focus was to research the eleven matches with connections to the mystery line to determine how they related to each other. [See Genogram]

Cousin 08 – This cousin was the known niece of J.T.’s living great-grandmother and was the anchor in this Leeds investigation. She is the granddaughter of Ernest Piatt and Bessie Mae Lucas and therefore has matches on both the paternal and maternal lines. We meticulously evaluated all matches shared with her until those not tied to her maternal grandmother (Bessie Lucas) or her paternal great-grandmother (Campsidell Piatt) were isolated. Despite our attempts to contact her, Cousin 08 has not logged into Ancestry for over a year. J.T.’s great-grandmother gave us her niece’s phone number, but our messages went unanswered.

Cousin 64 – His unlinked Ancestry tree identifies him as the son of Robert Piatt (1938-2004) and the grandson of Raymond Piatt and Dorothy E. Palmer. Dorotha Piatt’s 1976 obituary names her husband as Raymond Piatt who died in 1940, and her children as Evelyn Tucker, Melvin Piatt, and Robert Piatt, and that she had eight surviving grandchildren.[1] The obituary corroborates the data in Cousin 64’s tree. Although he initially responded to our inquiries on Ancestry, subsequent messages asking for collaboration on this identification project remain unanswered. He had not heard the name Campsidell before our brief Ancestry message exchanges.

Cousin 150 – She has an attached tree with five people, all marked living and private. Luckily, she responded to my Ancestry message, identifying her grandparents as Melvin Piatt and Carol LeMar. Melvin was identified in Dorotha Piatt’s obituary (see above) as the son of Raymond Piatt. Carol L. Piatt’s obituary published on 22 January 2000 corroborates the family connections.[2] This places Cousin 150 on the tree as the great-great-granddaughter of Campsidell Piatt.

Cousins 138 and 329 – Their online trees both connect them to Maryanne Habay, with Cousin 138 being her grandson and Cousin 329 her daughter.  An obituary at Find a Grave, first published in The Repository on 28 February 2011, verifies their familial ties.[3] The names in the obituary are the same as these two DNA matches, cementing their relationship as nephew and aunt.

The obituary identifies Maryanne’s husband as Richard Grant. The Grant surname is one of the common names for this cluster and is worthy of further investigation. The public linked tree for Cousin 329 names the parents of Richard Grant (Maryanne Habay’s husband) as Marion Willard Grant (1898-1961) and Esther Brady Grinder (1910-2002).

Marion W. Grant was found in the 1950 U.S. census living in Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania with his wife, Esther B. Grant, and sons Richard and Robert.[4] This record corroborates the data in Cousin 329’s tree. The Pennsylvania death certificate for M. Willard Grant also establishes a connection to his wife, Esther Grinder Grant, and matches the birth and death years found in Cousin 329’s tree.[5] M. Willard Grant was born on 1 December 1898 to parents, James Richard Grant and Grace Laird. He died at age 62 on 17 March 1961 in Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.

Marion W. Grant was enumerated with his parents and brothers in the 1900 U.S. census in Freeport, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.[6] James Grant was the head of house, born in December 1863. His wife was Grace, born in August 1865. Their sons were Charles C., age 13, Roy W., age 12, Harry V., age 8, and Marion W., age 1. The census is the second record pointing to James Grant as Marion’s father.

James Grant died at age 43 on 22 October 1907 from a cerebral hemorrhage in Hoskins Hospital in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia.[7] His death certificate says he was born on 20 December 1863 to Robert Grant and Nancy Cousins in Oil City, Pennsylvania. Marion Grant was the informant. J.R. Grant’s obituary says that he had worked in the oil business for the past 10 years. He was survived by his mother, Nancy Cousins Grant, three brothers, and two sisters.[8] Curiously, the obituary does not mention his wife and children.

James Grant was living with his parents in the 1870 U.S. census in Cranberry, Venango County, Pennsylvania.[9] Robert Grant was head of house, age 35. His inferred wife was Nancy, age 28. Their inferred children were Mary L., age 8, James, age 6, Alfred M., age 4, and Viola D., age 2.

Robert S. Grant died at the age of 66 on 31 August 1900 in Allegheny Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, of Bright’s disease.[10] The death record does not name his parents, but it says he was a married farmer. A Find a Grave memorial for Robert Sloan Grant has a tombstone photo with a death date of 29 August 1900 and a birthdate of 23 October 1833.[11]

A four-generation connection between Maryanne Habay Grant’s husband and Robert Sloan Grant has been established. This also confirms that Cousin 329 is the 2nd great-granddaughter of Robert Sloan Grant. In a brief Ancestry message exchange, Cousin 329 said she heard rumors of a great-grandfather having a second family but had no other information to share. Ancestry messages to Cousin 138 have not received a reply.

Cousins 403, 405, and 1736 – Cousin 403’s public tree places her as another 2nd great-granddaughter of Robert Sloan Grant and Nancy Cousins, through their daughter, Mary LeElla Grant. The Pennsylvania death certificate for Mary Lee Ella Smith further solidifies the connection, naming her parents as R.S. Grant and Nancy Anna Cousins.[12] She was born on 19 May 1861 in Butler County, Pennsylvania, and died on 4 August 1928 of suicide in Butler County.

In the 1900 U.S. census, Robert S. Grant and Nancy A. Grant were living with their son-in-law, Thomas Smith, and his wife, Leella M Smith, in Allegheny Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania.[13] Thomas Smith and Leella M. had been married for 21 years and had seven sons, with seven living, ranging in age from 19 to one. Of these children, Marion D. Smith, born March 1891, was the ancestor identified on Cousin 403’s tree.

Marion D. Smith died of a myocardial infarct at age 70 on 18 December 1961 in Billings, Montana.[14]  His death certificate names his parents as T. V. Smith and Ella Grant. The informant was Betty Smith, living at the same address as the deceased.

In the 1940 U.S. census, Marion D. Smith, age 48, was living with his wife, Betty C. Smith, and their daughter, Nancy L. Smith, in Casper, Natrona County, Wyoming.[15]

Nancy Lee Smith married Robert Milo Watkins on 30 September 1974.[16] Their marriage record names her parents as Marion Dee Smith and Betty C. Fowlkes. Nancy Lee Wakins’ 2007 obituary names her parents as Bettye (Fowlkes) and Marion Smith.[17] It also names four children. The obituary of Nancy’s first husband, Robert G. Dorn, names the same four people as his children.[18] Two of these children match the names of Cousin 403 and Cousin 1736, placing them on the tree as sisters. This confirms the online trees for Cousins 403 and 1736, which show them both as the children of Robert George Dorn (1933-2008) and Nancy Lee Smith (1936-2007).

A 1985 Montana birth record names Cousin 403 as the mother of Cousin 405.[19] Genealogical record evidence establishes these three DNA matches connections to Robert Sloan Grant.

Cousins 271 and 1777 – Both DNA matches have the Laughner surname in their online trees. Cousin 271 is the granddaughter of Chalmer Laughner and Hazel Benson, while Cousin 1777 is the great-great-grandson of Samuel S. Laughner and Sarah Jane Grant. A Find a Grave memorial for Sarah Jane Grant Laughner links to the memorials of her husband, Samuel S. Laughner, her parents, James Grant and Agnes Nancy Sloan Grant, and her brother, Robert Sloan Grant.[20] Here is another connection to Robert Sloan Grant, the ancestor of the previously discussed cousins. This memorial links the Laughner and Grant families.

The biography section of the memorial lists twelve children born to Samuel S. Laughner and Sarah Jane Grant. One of these children, John Laughner (1868-1943), is the ancestor of Cousin 1777 according to their public linked tree.

John Bower Laughner died of chronic myocarditis at the age of 75 on 17 July 1943.[21] His death certificate says he was born on 6 March 1868 in Clarion County, Pennsylvania to Samuel Laughner and Sara Grant. John married Jennie L. Lilly on 31 January 1889.[22] His occupation on the marriage record is “oil well driller.”

Their son, Frank B. Laughner, married first to Margaret E. Sager on 2 July 1914 in Butler County, Pennsylvania.[23] In 1920 Frank and Margaret were living in Logan, Allen County, Kansas, with two children, Arthur, age 3, and Elinor, age 2.[24] Frank worked as a pumper in the oil industry. He married second to Lela C. John on 11 July 1941.[25] This second marriage record says Frank was born on 4 August 1892 to John [Grant] and Jennie Lilly. Frank’s Find a Grave memorial links him to his two wives, and his parents, and gives a death date of 4 July 1961.[26]

The son of Frank B. Laughner and Margaret E. Sager, Arthur Frank Laughner, was born on 5 February 1916 and died in January 1978.[27] Arthur shares a tombstone with Sylvia R. (1916-1990).[28] In 1950, Arthur F. Laughner and his wife, Romaine Laughner, were living with three children in Potter, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.[29] Arthur Frank Laughner and Sylvia Romaine Johnston were the parents of Cousin 1777 according to their public linked tree.

The other Laughner connection comes through Cousin 271’s grandfather, Chalmers Laughner. A 1937 obituary for Chalmers names several people in his family.[30] His wife was Hazel Benson and they had three daughters, Virginia, Margaret, and Priscilla. Chalmers’ parents were Mr. and Mrs. P. O. Laughner. “His father was a prominent figure in the activities of the Oil City Oil Exchange.” Chalmers and Hazel married on 24 October 1914 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[31]

Perry Orville Laughner, an oil magnate, died in Florida on 17 April 1926.[32] His obituary names his son Chalmer C. Laughner. Perry was enumerated with his parents, Samuel Laughner and Sarah [Grant], in the 1870 U.S. census.[33]

Chalmers’ daughter, Virginia, married twice: first to William J. Percival on 21 March 1942 in Florida[34] and second to Walter J. Slater on 24 March 1947 in California.[35] Walter and Virginia were the parents of Cousin 271 according to her public tree.

Cousin 271 and Cousin 1777 are third cousins to each other and as descendants of Robert Sloan Grant’s sister.

Cousin 1796 – The last identified cousin in this mystery line has a very small online tree with only four people. It names his parents as Lester Wilson Cooper (1899-1974) and Myrtle Agnes McIntyre (1915- ), and a paternal grandfather as William David Cooper. Lester W. Cooper shares a headstone with his mother, Hulda Matilda Cooper.[36] The Find a Grave memorial links Lester to his spouse, Myrtle Agnes McIntyre Cooper.

Hulda died at the age of 74 on 4 September 1942 of congestive heart failure in Butler County, Pennsylvania.[37] She was born on 30 August 1868 in Clarion County, Pennsylvania to John N. Sloan and Mary Fulmer. On 28 June 1887, Tillie (a nickname for Matilda) Sloan married William David Cooper.[38] Her father, John N. Sloan, consented to the marriage.

John Newton Sloan died at age 74 on 10 April 1915 of myocardial insufficiency in Butler County, Pennsylvania. [39] He was born on 30 July 1840 to William Sloan and Jane Lesley.

The entry for William B. Sloan in the History of Venango County, Pennsylvania, confirms his marriage to Jane Leslie and names eleven of their children, including John N., born on 30 July 1840.[40] The short biography names William’s father as Samuel Sloan but does not name his mother.

In the History of Butler County, a biography of Samuel Sloan names his wife, Elizabeth Brann.[41] They had a large family that included siblings William and “Nancy (Grant).” Agnes Nancy Sloan Grant was the wife of James M. Grant and the mother of Robert Sloan Grant.[42]

This evidence places Cousin 1796 as the first cousin three times removed of Robert Sloan Grant.

Cousin 1623 – This match remained unidentified. They only have initials on their profile, which is managed by someone with an incognito username. The user has not logged into Ancestry for over a year, and messages sent through the platform have gone unanswered.
